What will happen at my first visit?
At your first visit, Dr. Williams will review your dental and medical history. We will also take any x-rays that are necessary. If you think you have recent x-rays taken by another dentist, you may request that your x-rays and files be forwarded to our office prior to your first appointment. Dr. Williams will evaluate each tooth, your gums and the supporting bone. In most cases we will be able to clean your teeth at the first visit. Please bring your dental insurance card, if you have one. You are welcome to print the new patient form from our website (see the “Our Office” tab) to bring with you.

What will my insurance cover?
Dental insurance is different from medical insurance in that it pays for a percentage of most procedures. Typically, your insurance will pay 100% of the cleaning, exam, and x-ray fees. Most insurance plans will pay 80% of the fees for a filling and 50% of the fees for a crown. Another difference between medical and dental insurance is that dental plans have a maximum coverage per year between $1000 and $2000. If you have questions regarding your insurance plan, we will be happy to help you find what your insurance will cover.

Will I be reminded of my appointments?
Yes. We will send you a postcard in the mail approximately 3 weeks before your cleaning appointment. In addition, you will receive an email or text message a week before an appointment. Each reminder will ask you to call or email our office to confirm your appointment. If we have not heard from you 2 days before your appointment, we will call you to confirm your appointment.

Should I have tooth colored fillings or silver fillings?
Dr. Williams has been placing tooth colored fillings for over 15 years and believes it is superior to silver fillings. Tooth colored (composite) fillings are bonded to the tooth by placing a series of bonding agents on the tooth before placing the composite. This material eliminates the risk for bacteria to grow between the silver filling and the tooth which can cause additional decay. Dr. Williams will be happy to discuss which filling material is best for you.

How long do fillings last?
Tooth colored composite fillings last between 10 and 20 years and silver fillings may last only 10 years. The edges of silver fillings erode allowing bacteria to grow between the tooth and the filling causing decay which may be undetectable by x-rays because of the metal filling.

When do I need a crown?
A crown is needed when a tooth is not strong enough to be viable on its own. A cracked tooth may need a crown to hold the sides together and prevent the crack from going into the nerve. A tooth that has had a root canal needs a crown because after a root canal, the tooth becomes brittle and is more likely to break.

Is there a way to straighten my teeth without metal braces?
Yes. There is a treatment called Invisalign which can straighten your teeth by wearing clear trays for approximately 2 weeks at a time. This process can take from 1 to 2 years to complete. To find out if you are a good candidate, call our office for a free consultation.

What are dental implants?
You may think of a dental implant as a replacement tooth, but it is actually a metal post or appliance that replaces a tooth root or roots. After the artificial root or roots are implanted, replacement teeth are put in place and anchored firmly to the bone by the implant. The new teeth look, feel and chew just like natural teeth. Dr. Williams will discuss with you the types of dental implants and determine which is best suited to your dental conditions.

Do all patients who want cosmetic dental makeovers get the same kind of teeth?
Absolutely not! Each patient is unique and their facial structure and skin tones will determine the appropriate teeth size, shape, and shade. Dr. Williams will consult with each patient and his laboratory to ensure the cosmetic changes result in a beautiful, natural looking smile.

Do I have to get my teeth capped to eliminate the space between my front teeth?
In most cases capping to correct spaces is not necessary. Beautiful, natural looking porcelain veneers (also called porcelain facings) can easily make dramatic cosmetic changes to remove spaces, fix cracked teeth, do minor tooth straightening, and change the color of your teeth. Little or no tooth structure may need to be removed to improve your smile.

Is tooth whitening safe?
Bleaching procedures are safe and approved by the American Dental Association. Bleaching does not wear away any tooth structure or make a tooth more susceptible to staining. Dr. Williams can offer several options for making your smile brighter.

Is surgery required if I have periodontal (gum) disease?
In many cases, a conservative course of periodontal treatment may eliminate the need for peridontal surgery. This care typically includes a series of nonsurgical gum treatments. Even if surgery is required, it often is needed only in a few areas of the mouth and results can be greatly enhanced by nonsurgical preparation.

If periodontal disease is such a problem, why doesn't it hurt?
This is a very good question. Periodontal problems can become extremely advanced without experiencing any pain. That is why it is so important to be attentive to the warning signs of periodontal disease: bleeding gums when brushing or flossing, swollen or receded gums, teeth changing position, or pus or swelling around the gum tissue.
